We find the restriction by feel.
For the knots, tightness, and old scar tissue that hands and stretching never quite reach: specially designed instruments that find the restriction and release it.
What It Is
Some restrictions hide below what fingertips can feel. Muscle and fascia that have knotted and gone guarded. Adhesions and scar tissue left over from an old injury. Tissue that stays tight no matter how much you stretch, foam roll, or wait it out.
IASTM, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, is hands-on work with a set of specially designed instruments. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy glides them over the muscle and fascia to find the restriction, then works it loose. The tools amplify what the hands feel and reach precise layers, so we can treat the adhesions and scar tissue that manual therapy alone can miss.
IASTM is the broader technique, not one brand. Graston is one specific instrument system within it; here we choose the right tool and the right pressure for your tissue, guided by your cause-first evaluation. Left alone, restricted tissue teaches the area around it to guard, and the tightness spreads. We stop that early.
The right tool, chosen for your tissue
What It Helps
If tissue feels locked no matter what you do, there’s a good chance a restriction or adhesion is the reason.
What A Session Looks Like

We retrain the motion, same visit.
Why It Works

Questions, Answered
A massage relaxes tissue in general. IASTM is targeted: your Doctor of Physical Therapy uses specially designed instruments to find the exact restriction, adhesion, or scar tissue, then works it loose and reinforces the new motion with movement so it holds. It is treatment with an endpoint, not a standing appointment.
Sometimes. As the instruments free up restricted tissue, a little redness or light bruising can show up over the treated area, and it fades within a few days. We work in the range you can handle, adjust the pressure to your tissue, and explain what to expect before we start.
You will not be strung along. IASTM is one tool inside a plan with an endpoint, and after your first visit you leave knowing what is wrong, how long it should take, and how many hands-on sessions are likely. Most people feel a shift within the first few visits. Questions before then? Call us at (949) 388-5692.
